Helping people have access to clean water and renewable energy are well-known but nonetheless cirtical needs in so many parts of the world. Least of These International (LOTI) is committed so finding solutions. LOTI hopes that others will recognize these great human needs and partner with us in providing relief.

LOTI's current relief efforts are found in the villages and urban centers around Nairobi . Partnering with an organization founded by a local, LOTI has joined Possibilities Africa (www.possibilitiesafrica.org) to address the following primary needs:

  1. Improving the supply of clean water
  2. Training to use simple irrigation technologies
  3. Providing access to inexpensive sources of power

Project Descriptions

  1. Mbeere community:
    • There is an acute problem for water access. The community is approximately 5 kilometers from a permanent natural water source, yet without a current means of tapping into that supply. The tragedy is that a relatively simple solution exists. The water, if piped, can come to the community through gravity since the source is uphill. Without someone to enable them, this community is likely to remain in its current state, semi-arid and very poor.
    • Lack of water access has also affected food supply. There is a great need for irrigation technologies to allow farming projects to begin.
    • Clean water and renewable energy will improve health. The medical clinic needs a water purification system and access to a solar system for power. This system could be linked to the local school in order to increase the learning tools available to teachers

    Solutions have been identified and funds are needed for implementation. With these funds, the elementary school in the community will finally have access to water, a purification system for drinking water will be installed, and villagers will learn to set up and use an irrigation system for farming.


  2. The Namawanga village:
    • Community needs are primarily for irrigation and clean water. Current solutions involve creating a water pumping system and a water purification system.
  3. In urban centers and villages surrounding Nairobi:
    • Community needs are primarily for irrigation and clean water. Current solutions involve creating a water pumping system and a water purification system.

Conclusion

The ocean of need in our world is overwhelming. While many organizations are doing excellent work, so much more must be done to relieve the suffering caused by the absence of basics like clean water and renewable energy. Helping people is not just a nice thing to do but something that will affect their livelihood and welfare for generations.
